Celebrating Black History Month with the Power of Laughter

Celebrating Black History Month with the Power of Laughter

MoFo is proud to celebrate Black History Month and all of the pioneers who paved — and continue to pave — the way for civil rights and equality in America. This year we have chosen The Power of Laughter as a theme to weave throughout inspiring and educational activities in our month-long celebration.

The Power of Laughter honors trailblazing black comedians and entertainers who serve as a reminder that finding humor in life can empower us when we feel powerless. The theme presents a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the comedians who have enriched our lives, remember performers of the past, and appreciate contemporary artists who bring laughter into our lives and help us navigate through difficult and trying times.

On February 21, former MoFo legal secretary and world-renowned impressionist and comedienne, Sylvia Traymore Morrison, will return to the Northern Virginia office to share her experiences of a time when being a black female impressionist was unheard of. Today, Sylvia is a legend in her own right, becoming one of America’s most accomplished black female impressionists and one of the first African-American woman writers for Saturday Night Live.

Born in Washington, D.C., just 12 blocks from the White House, Sylvia got her big break after signing with Redd Foxx, then going on to host a roast of heavyweight boxing champ Muhammad Ali at the legendary Apollo Theater. Since then, she has toured and opened for artists such as Whitney Houston, Gladys Knight, and Chaka Khan. Her story is one of courage, dignity, drive, and inspiration, and a great example of the power of laughter. Sylvia’s presentation will be available for live broadcast across all MoFo’s offices.

Throughout the month, MoFo attorneys and staff will have the chance to test their knowledge in a Power of Laughter–themed riddle game to win prizes, including a copy of Sylvia Traymore Morrison’s book Almost There, Almost: The Many Faces of Sylvia Traymore Morrison. There will also be an opportunity to participate in an office-wide raffle whose proceeds will benefit the United Negro College Fund.

Visit us throughout the month for more stories as we celebrate The Power of Laughter and Black History Month. You can also read more about MoFo’s diversity and inclusion initiatives here.
