For some students, summer vacation means lazy afternoons and barbeques. For the 18 diversity fellows who are joining MoFo this summer, summer means afternoon meetings and pizza making!
On May 18, 18 fellows — including six returning diversity fellows and three Sponsors for Educational Opportunity fellows — attended the Diversity Fellowship Welcome Reception at Pizza a Casa in New York City. The fellows enjoyed a night of pizza making while getting acquainted with one another.
On the following morning, our diversity fellows attended the Diversity Fellowship Kickoff event in our New York office.
The Kickoff began with a breakfast and welcoming remarks from Natalie Kernisant, director of diversity and inclusion.
Attorney development manager Jessica Hernandez moderated a panel discussion about “Succeeding as an Associate,” which featured Los Angeles associate Carlos Espinoza, San Francisco associate Luis Gabriel Hoyos, Washington, D.C. associate Crystal Kaldjob, and New York associate Jenny Wang.
During the afternoon, attendees took part in breakout sessions that included:
- “Anatomy of a Deal,” led by New York partner Peter Dopsch
- “Timeline of a Civil Litigation,” led by Henry Brown, director of attorney training
- “Practice Hot Topics,” led by New York associates Dario de Martino, Nicole Humphrey, Kat Mateo, David Medlar, Judy Mok, and Anthony Ramirez; and senior pro bono counsel Jennifer K. Brown
Starting this month, the fellows will join us in our Los Angeles, New York, Palo Alto, San Diego, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. offices.
Diversity fellows are selected from a highly competitive pool of applications from the top law schools in the United States. This year’s fellows come from Columbia Law School, NYU School of Law, Stanford Law School, UC Berkeley, and UCLA School of Law.
2017 marks the sixth year of MoFo’s 1L Diversity Fellowship Program. Since the program’s inception, we have awarded 48 fellowships to promising law students of color and LGBT law students.
