Partner Spotlight: Alexis Amezcua

Alexis Amezcua is a litigation partner in MoFo’s San Francisco office. She is a highly accomplished class action and commercial litigator who represents both plaintiffs and defendants in state and federal court, as well as arbitration proceedings. She also has an active role in the firm’s pro bono efforts, recently representing two Rohnert Park residents who claimed their right to privacy was violated by an unreasonable police search of their home. Alexis was also recently on the ground in Texas and New Mexico, where she was able to reunite a father and his daughter who were separated at the border as they sought asylum.

  • In two to three sentences, describe your practice. I am a class action and commercial litigator, which means I defend clients facing consumer class actions, as well as business disputes. Plaintiffs in those cases typically allege breach of contract, breach of warranty, false advertising, and violation of various consumer protection statutes. I also regularly counsel clients regarding pre-litigation strategy, product launches, and risk management in various contexts, including government investigations.
  • Why did you choose to make MoFo your professional home? When I was a 1L at Stanford, I asked a trusted professor where I should work. I told her I wanted to try a law firm in the Bay Area, and I wanted to work at a place that had interesting clients, valued diversity, and encouraged pro bono work. She told me there was only one place I could go—MoFo—and put me in touch with Arturo Gonzàlez. Arturo recruited me to the firm, and he and others have served as my mentors throughout my career.
  • How do clients benefit from having diverse teams of lawyers working for them? A diverse legal team is advantageous for clients in a number of ways. At trial, having the legal team reflect the increasing diversity of our jury pools may enable that team to better communicate with and read the jurors. During litigation, having team members who can relate with and easily talk to the witnesses and subject matter experts, who themselves are also increasingly diverse, benefits both the client and likely the overall outcome of the case. And, finally, bringing to any discussion a diversity of ideas, experiences, and impressions results in more thoughtful, nuanced discussions and outcomes.
